Abstract: This work describes the design and the implementation of a mechatronic system for automation of the quality control of a plastic surface. A commercial vision system is used to detect and quantify the irregularities on the surface of a piece for a car dashboard. The surface of the plastic product is adequately lighted; the image is acquired through a CCD camera and analyzed by a dedicated software program. The irregularities are detected by finding the shadow they cast if the surface is properly lit.
