Design and Implementation of a Mechatronic Device for X-ray Collimation

Abstract: A high precision device for X-ray collimation has been realized in our laboratory. It can be easily programmed and is to be integrated into operating linear accelerators in order to increase the selectivity and the accuracy of radiosurgical treatments. The device described in this work features high selectivity and accuracy, because the servo-controlled, programmable collimator allows to position a narrow X-ray beam with great accuracy, so as to irradiate only the tumoral cells, saving the healthy ones. The realization of the device is the first step of a project which will be carried out together with the Radiosurgery Department of the Civil Hospital of Vicenza, Italy. The aim of the project is to realize a mechatronic system that could manage the whole radiosurgical treatment, allowing the surgeon to operate more efficiently and accurately.
