Elimination of chatter phenomenon in wood machining by means of damping elements

Abstract: Under certain conditions an undesired self-excited vibration phenomenon known as chatter occurs in wood machining operations. Several linear undamped dynamic models have been proposed in literature in order to give an explanation of the problem. One possible way to prevent chatter involves the use of damping elements. Contrary to common sense, since the dynamic system describing the interaction between cutting tools and workpieces is non-conservative, damping elements could not stabilize the system and might even cause instability. This work presents an analytical investigation of the possibility of employing damping elements to prevent chatter on an initially undamped and unstable model of a two-degree-of-freedom machine for wood cutting. Both flutter instability and divergence are considered. Some simplifying assumptions are made to facilitate the analysis.
