FIRB - Flexible haptic system for rehabilitation

type: MIUR FIRB
period: 2004-2006
head: prof. Aldo Rossi

description: The main task of the project is the development of systems and methodologies to perform rehabilitation by means of haptic interfaces. A haptic interface is a robotized device designed to interact with a human operator, giving tactile sensations to him by means of force-feedback. The feeling of external forces is an essential aspect of rehabilitation. Even though the project is focused on the development of haptic interfaces for rehabilitation and on the definition of suitable clinical treatment protocols, the final aim is to develop a complete diagnosis-thearapy-rehabiltation-home care path. So, the project is very articulated.
The patients that need a rehabilitation treatment may have pathologies very different one to another. In the case of conventional or stereotactic neurosurgery, the treatment starts with diagnosis and proceeds with surgical operations, rehabilitation and home care. In most cases, these phases are not integrated in a global planning of the whole treatment. Moreover, on one hand the field of neurosurgery has achieved significant developments due to the rapid evolution of technology, on the other hand no consistent innovations have been achieved during the last twenty years in the field of neurological patients rehabilitation.
